More 2007 Jeep Wrangler TK Information

The new TK and TKL designs will be 2007 model year but will be introduced between January and August 2006, “when” depending entirely upon the construction progress of the new Toledo Jeep assembly plant (presently in the structural steel stage). The 4-door TKL version will be introduced first and 2007 model year production at the new facility will overlap the production of 2006 model year 2-door TJ and Unlimited TJ models at the current Toledo facility. The shorter 2-door TK’s will follow the TKL within 5 weeks. The original Jeep Toledo facility will eventually be demolished.

2) The 2-door TK will be approximately 6” wider than the TJ, and the wheelbase will be around 101”, similar to the Unlimited TJ. The 4-door TKL will share the general dimensions of the Gladiator concept, meaning about 6” wider than the TJ and with a wheelbase of 138”. (Don’t bemoan the larger dimensions, this will allow the factory to safely fit optional 33” diameter tires.) Two different packaged TKL versions will be initially available, these will be called Laredo and Rubicon. Three initial TK versions are planned, to be called SE/Sport/Rubicon.

3) Both TK and TKL will come in a single body version with full height doors and roll-up windows, integral roll cages, rear liftgate, and removable roof panels. The top options will represent solid or tinted transparent plastic – solid panels will be body paint color. Front fenders and rear fender flaress will be body-contrasting bolt-on plastic. Protective plastic body cladding will be used above the sills, save for Rubicon models which substitute diamond plate steel cladding. There is provision for storing the roof panels behind the rear seat.

4) Both TK and TKL will incorporate side impact and head restraint safety systems as well as standard airbags, soft interior surfaces, and anti-dive dashes. Unlike the full-length vehicle frames used in prior Jeep Universals, the TK and TKL will incorporate “shorty” frames with impact-absorbing structures and conventional styled bumpers at both ends. Again, don’t be displeased, an optional winch bumper will be available on front and a tow-rated receiver bumper on the rear. Tow capacity will be greater than TJ but nobody’s speculating by how much.

5) Standard engine for the TK SE will be the 2.4L 4-cylinder gas engine. Available TK optional powerplants will be limited to the 3.7L V-6. The standard TKL engine will be the 3.7L, the available option will be the 5.7-liter Hemi with MDS (multi displacement system, for 4-or-8-cylinder operating modes). Diesel engines will be available for Export vehicles only, not for US models. Available transmissions will initially include the 6-speed manual and a new (for Wrangler) 5-speed automatic. The 5-speed will include the ERS (Electronic Range Select) feature of the current WK, and should satisfy those who cannot decide between manual and automatic.

6) The remaining powertrain pieces include both part time and fulltime 4WD transfer cases derived from Mercedes SUV products, with available options that include the center ELSD (Electronic Limited Slip Differential). The same basic transfer case will be available with two different low range gears, the lower gearing being available only for the Rubicon models. AAM axles will be used on both vehicles with downsized versions standard and an available heavy duty axle for the 3.7L TK, also standard on TKL and Rubicon TK. The standard differentials will be open, with optional helical-gear LSDs “soon”. Rubicon models will have standard electric locking differentials made by AAM. Full-on electronic traction control will be available on “some” models. 4-wheel power disk brakes and power steering are standard in all TK and TKL models.

7) No photos of TK and TKL are yet available. Anything you see on the Web is a photo-chop job. Some of the heavily disguised test mules that have been labeled “Commander” by the press are in fact 4-door TKL test mules. However, the published photos of the Gladiator concept “greatly resemble” TK and TKL from the “B” pillar forward (that is from the rear edge of the front doors).

8) Jeep Gladiator has not been OK’d for 2007 production. DCX thinks it and the Power Wagon are too similar. The Gladiator and TKL will share many components including the frame and powertrain, therefore Gladiator MAY be produced as a 2008+ model at the new Wrangler facility.

i think some of those specs are speculation ... a wheelbase of 138" would put that bigger than the rescue concept at about 125", and that's 30" longer than the current unlimited and the commander! i doubt that jeep is gonna increase the size that much.

in any case, that 4-door is awesome, and if you compare the spy-shots with the rescue concept pics, they look almost identical!!

now my only problem is, do i buy the commander or do i buy the rescue?!

just my 2 cents.

Of course, its all speculation until it's sitting on the showroom floor, but it sure is exciting to dream about what you would change if you were on the jeep design team. I am not the Author of the aticle above, I found it at http://jeepforum.com, but I do think that it has some interesting points. If nothing else the author is at least thinking outside the realm of woo hoo a new jeep, i'm gettin one, are you, i'm gettin purple, what color are you getting, yeah ill trade my TJ in right now for a TK, la la la la...

I can appreciate all point of view as well as any information that gives readers more insight as to what Daimler Chrysler might do! Daimler Chrysler studies the gossip and the internet chat, they google there products, they monitor sites like http://jeepforum.com, and http://jeep.blogplot.com and many others so as to gain insite to what the End User wants. This is probobly why they turned out a record number of new products in 2004 and will do it again in 2006, 2007. My Point: They are listening to the customer and acting on what they hear. So if you want an option that you dont see then you better start yelling.

I have always had a love/hate relationship with the wrangler. My Dad always had one when we were young, but moved to cherokee as we got older. Althought the quality declined in those mid 80's products, they were not all that bad considering the era.

Anyway, my last one (girlfriends 90 wrangler) proved that they were more utilitarian than we wanted. Rough ride, cold in winter, top hard to take off, etc. etc.

However, this new update has me intrigued. I wonder how much of an upgrade it will be? A couple of things that are unclear though.

1. Third row seat? If a regular Wrangler has a bench in back, couldn't they do with a 3rd row in the back. That would make more appealing than the H3.

2. Diesel. Has anyone looked at the gas prices lately? I hope they put a diesel in. Sales will suffer if it is a gas hog. Who really needs a Hemi in this day and age of traffic everywhere?

If has these two option on the tkl and at least power windows(yes i am a wimp), i would sell my so called european sport wagon (VW passat 1.8t) and order one right now.

Any thoughts and when are we going to get some real specs on this thing. That article was good, but still no spy shots or interior details.

I believe Jeep will be making a serious MISTAKE by changing the TJ size that much. They already sell quite a few units of the Wrangler. Why not add another Wrangler like product (there's some heritage) and keep the Wrangler true to it's roots?

I'm quite interested in the TK, but it seems like it's kind of a dumbed down RESCUE concept. I'd LOVE the RESCUE with the towing, room and power illustrated in the concept vehicle. (6 cyl. Cummins, and solid axles--SWEET!!!!!!---and finally) You've added 6" inches of width and you still offer a standard 4 cyl. That will accelerate like a slug at this elevation (I live in the Rockie mountains--They don't seem to build vehicles for here).

To me, the illustrated TK alienates the current Wrangler crowd (did you notice the soft top comments) due to the upsizing and doesn't give the interested RESCUE buyers enough of what they want. Sounds like Jeep is missing the boat again (that's three in a row for me.....KJ is not interesting in the least to me, WK will NEVER be in my garage (current ZJ owner looking for a replacement) and the Commander is (I don't even know--what's with the Land Rover-Cherokee (XJ) love child look?--what do I get out of the size---nothing in the way of towing or whatever....can't Jeep use some Ram (2500-3500) truck items?) totally missing the boat for me.

from what i've been reading around the net, Jeep won't abandon production of the 2-door version of the wrangler, and unless it's just an internet rumor, there's some federal reg's that are requiring the use of side airbags. apparently that's why there's the talk of removable panels for the roof.

if you also check out jeepnewsnow.com there's some more pics there of roadtesting the 4-door version. in those pics the roof-line camo is popping up, maybe the panels were off the top or maybe it was real windy in the desert that day. who knows but the lucky engineers i guess.

i like the fact that jeep is starting to create more vehicles to try to position themselves in various markets since they seem to be the forgotten child in DC's family. as long as they stay true to the go anywhere mantra of Jeep, they will maintain there current customer base and attract new consumers to a great vehicle.

i had a 96 chero classic that got rolled over and couldn't be saved. i've been waiting for a Jeep to replace it. now that i have a wife, son and two lab's i'm gonna need four-doors on my Jeep, and i wasn't really turned on my the grand's or libby. for my situation, this seems like the perfect solution, 4WD capability and room, and before i forget make mine diesel!

I agree with Marc. It seems they're trying to expand the sales of the Wrangler. They want to keep the current Wrangler sales and sell that same vehicle to people who like the Rescue. I think in the end, they'll just end up disappointing both crowds. There's no reason they can't add a model like the Rescue along with an updated Wrangler. I just think that trying to squeeze a four-door into the Wrangler lineup will spoil it too much. I wasn't a big fan of the Unlimited when it first came out. But seeing the old Scramblers and the Rubicon version of it has helped it grow on me. But to me, a Wrangler is 2-doors and a soft top and from what I can see in the spy shots it'll only be half a Wrangler...

If there is a DCX executive that happens to read this comment and is willing to sell me a diesel 2-door or 4-door Wrangler, I will buy it and pay cash! NOW!

With the cost of gas skyrocketing, I believe adding a diesel option in the U.S. will drive sales. We are an all Jeep family but will leave the brand for better efficiently and range.

A good Cummins Diesel would go nicely but from what I've read they would use another brand of diesel and the mileage on the Liberty is not any improvement over the gas burner.

With smog regulations going into affect and cities with currently out of regs: The Commander in Chief has ordered for more enviromental friendly alternatives be put in place, especially here in Texas. This is why I believe the (bio) diesel is needed here in the U.S.

I can't imagine why the 2.8 CRD diesel would not be offered and promoted. It seems like it offers better mpg and good torque. Must be too hard to make or too expensive to import?

HEY DCX. I have owned Jeeps since before I could drive (legaly) I want nothing less than a rugged, take me to Moab, refined, leather trimed (heated seats of course) Jeep Wrangler 4 door with Hemi V8 or a great diesel. I think that you might just be making what I want with the 2007 Jeep Wrangler, but if you don't give me more pictures and information within the next couple if weeks I am going to abandon the Jeep family and buy a Hummer H3!!! You heard me, I am a trader I know it but can you imagine how much work it would take to make the Grand a great offroader with 33's and still drive great. THROW ME A BONE HERE!!!. I am positive that other Hard Core Jeepers with families are in the same boat, they are just too ashamed to say it. DCX don't loose your Jeep family, give us some info and pics please.

i have a friend who is working on the 07 wrangler. i got to see it and it looks like a hummer. it is really cool. at least the 4 door is. he has said that it rides nicer, you do not get the road noise, and it has the best suspension ever.

I had a 98 Wrangler for five years, and just bought a Nissan Frontier when the transmission went out in the Wrangler (after two of the engines went out as well).

I can't wait to see the end result of the new Wrangler, since I plan on buying one in a year or two to replace the Frontier I just bought. I hope Jeep doesn't change the Wrangler and make it into some type of SUV that the masses drive in Alpharetta (a burb north of Atlanta), and I hope Jeep doesn't make it too sophisticated. The automotive world has way too much sophistication, we don't need anymore, especially with the Jeep Wrangler....Safety features, yes, but more sophistication, no.

Also, does anyone have more info regarding the top. I really liked the fabric top I had, but if panels reduce the time it requires to take the top off, I'm all for it. I wonder how and where the roof panels will be stored? Behind the back seat?

If anyone has answers, please let me know.

I hope Jeep makes the 3.0L V6 CRD available for the 4 door Wrangler, this engine is already used in Jeep Grand Cherokees outside of the US. The additional torque would make up for the 1 or 2 miles per gallon we would sacrifice. There had better be some type of removable top, or it's just a bloated Liberty. Being a current Jeep owner, a removable top and robust efficient engine options are the top priorities (4 cyl gas engine should be decommissioned like the I6). So the base engine should be the 3.7V6, with the CRD and MDS Hemi as options.

First of all I think that the new 2007 Unlimited is a perfect combination betwwen a Wrangler and the Rescue. I know I am going to get one. My only fear is that the four door Wrangler is going to become a soccer mom, grocery getter, four wheel drive that never touches dirt. I have seen alot of blogs of people who are happy to see a jeep that they can fit their family, i.e. snot nosed kids, and all their crap in. The wrangler has never been about that, it has been about freedom, youth (or the preception of) not having car seats in the back, or personal DVD players for each child to watch in he back seat. Listen, if you have a family, and you want a jeep, then I suggest that you get a Commander, or Cherokee, or Liberty, or Compass, or Patriot. But please, don't turn the image of our beloved Wrangler into a minivan. Or better yet, if you really feel that trapper by the life you have chosen with kids than buy a Harley Davidson Motorcycle, and trailer it to Sturgis.

There are more than a fair share of Wranglers now that never see dirt. Filled with teenagers that will never even take it on a dirt road, let alone a trail. Soccer Moms, business men, even grandparents buy them now for the image as it is. There are many older people driving them as well as younger people because the Wrangler is about adventure and exploration, which I would hope when I get older I am not banned from doing as you seem to suggest. I would ask these questions in response to your soccer mom post. At what age should you be banned form having fun? Do you think having kids is the end of life? You say you don't want to see "snot nosed kids" in Wranglers. Who cares if the snot nosed kid in in the back or up front driving? Who made you the Jeep Nazi? The 4 door jeep is in response to those that love the Wrangler but want more room to cary more, whether is be gear, people, kids, it does not matter. Jeep needs this vehicle to survive. It is good to see that they are getting that rugged trail rated vehicles are what they are good at and they need to stay ahead of the market. There is more competition now in the off road market and the 2-door Wrangler has one limitation that keeps them from selling more than they do. They are tight for space. The 4-door gives people an option.

Is it true that jeep is not going to produce the gladiator! What a mistake that vehicle is perfect. I know of alot of people including myself that couldn't wait till it hit the market.Is there anyway to convince jeep that they are making big mistake not putting this into production?
