Jeep Blog

Author On the Trail.

This is the Jeep Blog of Ryan Hicks. I started this blog with the hope of creating a central place for information on various Jeep interest. A message board, Blog with comment sections that don’t require you to sign up for the spam and other trash that comes along with giving out your e-mail info. I have discovered over the past couple of years that there are gaps in information regarding modifications, and installation instructions for many of the products on the Jeep market. This product works great but to use it with this other product you will have to cut here and turn the hootiekye sideways for the doomiflauchy to fit properly. Instructions like this combined with some of the worst picture quality in the history of retail lead me to believe that this blog was necessary. That being said here are some pictures of what this blog is really all about: Jeeps, Trails, and Friends.

Wow. I get to make the first comment. I would like to have a memorable comment, but alas all I could think of is hurry up and post some more stuff. Your blog looks great and I am sure the content will be equally great.

Re: Jeep Blog

I'm currently looking for specs (dimensions) of the roll cage on an '04 rubicon. Any insite on where I might find or who I might request this info from?

Re: Jeep Blog

I would google (cad '04 Rubicon roll cage) for starters. After that I would maybe take some measurements inside your cab with the hard or soft top on and pay a visit to my local fabrication shop. Your local Fabrication shop is a great resource they can build almost anything, and will quote you for free in many instances. Besides that they are local and will ususally stand behind thier word.

Jeep front wheels wobble

I have a 2004 Wrangler X with 30x9 tires. At about 15k miles the front end started wobbling badly between 35 and 50 mph after a big bump or a series of small bumps. I can not speed up to get out of it but I can slow down to 30 and it will stop. I am looking for a little help. The service dept will not touch it because the shocks are new, tires are different, and steering stablizer is new.

Jeep front wheels wobble

Gerald,

I had the same thing happening with my Jeep before I switched from my factory tires to my 31's. It turns out that my tires were out of balance and out of round, and as you described I could be driving along just fine and then I would hit a bump and my front end would start to wobble and the only way to get it to stop was to slow down. I switched over to some new tires shortly after and it went away.

If your tires are just out of balance you can just have them re-balanced and the problem should go away, however if their out of round then theirs no real way to fix it. My shops don't have the ability to fix an out of round tire.

The third option would be something we call death wobble. Death wobble usually occurs when you have a loose suspension component usually a track bar, the joint is loose and allows lateral movement of the suspension when you hit a bump. The only way to check for this would be to check your track bar and to make sure that your bolts are all tight. You could get underneath the jeep and have someone rock the Jeep while your underneath it and look for any blots that appear to have any play.

Good Luck

2004 Jeep Wrangler

This is an interesting site, I have a 2004 Jeep Wrangler X Columbia edition that I took into a garage about two weeks ago for what I thought would be a simple four wheel rotation balance and alignment. The tire work was done and I was told that the alignment couldnt be done due to a loose track bar. So I thought that since it was still under warranty (35,600) I would take it to the dealer for a quick repair. Now after going to two dealers and being told anything from the track bar is supposed to be loose to I have four cupped tires I am confused, so I took it back to the original garage and had them show me what the issue was. One guy got in and moved the sterring wheel back and forth while the mechanic showed me a bushing with a bolt going through it that was moving, the mechanic told me this was not supposed to happen and if it wasnt fixed soon it would just get worse. About two to three time this past week after going about 60mph and hitting bumps I noticed my sterring wheel vibrating quite a bit and doing some research on the internet I now believe more than ever that I have a loose track bar a dangerous situation and two jeep dealers who wont own up to the problem and fix it, oh and by the way I now have 36025 miles I am out of warranty and dont really know what to do next so any and all help would be appreciated.

Re: Jeep Blog

This is a very seriouse problem that needs to be taken care of before you end up in a ditch. I would also try writing or emailing Jeep.

Re: Jeep Blog

Hey, surfed right in here...anyway, about the loose track bar: if you brought it in to the dealer you should have documentation that you complained about a loose track bar. That should cover your butt for a warranty claim since it was before your warranty was up. I can't believe a dealer wouldn't fix that. If it's the bolt/bushing end, try tightening it yourself. If it's the greasable ball stud end, it's toast. As far as Wranglers in general, keep those front ends greased! I think most people never bother and it's expensive to replace tie rod ends, track bars, etc. I just had to replace my sway bar links but they weren't greasable. What a crappy design. The new Moog brand replacements are greasable and are cheaper than Jeep parts anyway. If you've got a big clunk in your wrangler, check those sway bar links.

Cheers,
Dave

2004 Wrangler X = can anybody help me, I have 15" diameter rims on my jeep, I want to get biggers tires, Jeep tire size is 215 x 75 x 15

will this work? Thanks Guys

Re: Jeep Blog

I too have a 2004 Columbia Edition X. You may want to take a look at those tires again, they were supposed to come with 225/75R15 Goodyear Wrangler GS-A's on them as stock with upgraded (Columbia) rims. (unless you elected otherwise) If you access any of the "Standard" tire websites that have the "tires that fit-your-car" selection, the X model will not show that 225's come with the Wrangler, even as an option, so you have to look at the "Sport" as a selection with the optional size. Also, at 35k miles, my tires started to go "out-of-round" and I needed to pick up a set. This website shows excellent replacement options for anyone that has to deal with new tires and some brand alternatives: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.jsp?type=ORAT

I don't know about anyone else, I am experiencing a small oil drip that appears to be coming from the rear seals, down the bell housing of the transmission. Looks like I have to place a call into service for an appt, but my local mechanic tells me that the 6 cyl are nortorious for leaking from the double seal while the 4 cyl has the single seal and doesn't leak.

Re: Jeep Blog

I purchased a new Jeep 'TJ right before Thanksgiving last year. I just took the top down for the first time... WHAT WERE THEY THINKING WHEN THEY DESIGNED THIS THING? I owned an '87 Wrangler (had it for 19 years - gave it to my Dad when I got the new one...), and could put up and take down the top in less than 3 minutes; it folded nicely in place. The design team for the '06 must've been on loan from the San Diego zoo (come to think of it, the chimps could've done better). These folks solved one problem - wind noise - and caused several more. Very smart. No wonder the US automotive industry is in trouble!

I recentlly purchased a Golen engine through a friend of my son's. The engine came defective from the factory. The owner of the company has given me the runaround for three weeks now with repeated phone calls and long periods on hold. as of yet I not been reembursed The 218$ to correct the reversed main seal that came from the factory. I could only wish this warranty issue could be handled differently so that I could recomend Golen engines to other Jeepers. This has been time consuming and aggravating. I regret receiving a Golen Engine. Regards T.K. Bergman.

Re: Jeep Blog

I have a question. I have a 2004 Jeep Wrangler Sport that I just purchased. I would like to be able to take the doors off. However, there is no information in the manual about taking the doors off. There is a page on how to take off the door frames (the plastic piece that goes around the door window) but there are not any instructions on how to take off the door. I tried taking the nut off the bottom of the two hinges, but I couldn't lift the door off the hinges, even with the bottom nut taken off. Help. Thanks.

Jeep loses power for millisecond

I've searched the blogs, I'm hoping for some direction.

1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ, 4cyl, 2.5litre

Here's what happens, idling, 1st, 2nd....5th gears... the engine hesitates and loses power just for a fraction of a second. It is never as if the engine might die, never as if there's anything major wrong, no check engine light, no problems starting or turning off the engine. No other problems of any kind.

I've done:
Tune-up, new plugs, wires everything
Fuel Injector cleaning
Fuel filter, replaced

Any suggestions?

Re: Jeep Blog

I purchased a 2004 Jeep Sahara one year to and had no problems with it, until recently. I recieved a call from my wife saying that it the front end started shaking uncontrolably and didn't stop until she pulled off the road and came to a complete stop. I drove it for the next week or two and noticed that it shakes whenever i hit a bump or hole in the road. It woudl stop when i would slow down but sometimes it would shake a little at low speeds. I am about to take my long awaited drive from NC to CA after my discharge and having it breakdown in me in the middle of the country is something i dont want to experience. Any help on what to do or what may be wrong would be greatly appreciated.

Ive had my 2004 Jeep sahara now for about a year and have had no problems with it. It has roughly 23000 miles and have done nothing other than the normal maintenance on it. Lately i have been experienced what ive read as a "Death Wobble" , i would hit a bump in the road and it would start shaking and would continue to shake until i slowed down. It would also happen at slow speeds but not that bad. I am about to get out of the Marine Corps and take my long awaited drive back to CA from NC and the last thing that needs to happen is that i get stuck in the middle of the country. Any insight of what the problem would be and what i need to do to fix it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Jeep Blog

Looks like the "death wobble" scared the heck out of me the first time it happened. I had the wheels balance, tire rotated and aligned spent special care on the tire pressure. When I called the stealer ship they told me I needed the 30k check up (I have 28.5k) $345.00. Said most of the problem with the front and rear transfer cases that they needed changing. Can any one confirm that? I will check the bolts on the track bar as soon as I can find out where they are.

Re: Jeep Blog

Hi Krysta

I had the same problem. What i did was, unscrew the nuts almost all the way down(but do not take them off), then i took a standard shop jack and a piece of 2x4 or anything else that is roughly the height from the jack to the upper hinge nut. Put 2x4 on a jack and wedge it under the upper nut, then slowly keep jacking up. As you do this, try swinging door left and right (you can only pivot about 10-20 degrees). Give it some time, it should come off. Also to speed up the process, use some sort of lubricant or degreeser.
I hope that will help.

Ps. I am still looking for a quality jeep shop that will do a lift on my JEEP ( in buffalo area)

I've got an 88 Jeep Wrangler that wont start. It sat for a few weeks. The last time I drove it I had to push start it as the battery was dead. I've since replaced the battery. When I tried to start it the first time I got a few clicks. The next time nothing. I checked the battery to ensure it was holding a charge and it was. Now when I try to start it I dont even get a click. The clables are all hooked up correctly and tight. Wires to the starter are also connected. Any ideas? ? ?

Re: Jeep Blog

Hi,

Someone asked earlier in this thread about replacing the stock 215x75x15 tires on a Wrangler X but I didn't see a definitive answer.

Does anyone know if 235x75x15 will fit on those stock wheels? Is that size different enough to significantly change the look of the vehicle? The 215's look awfully small in those big wheel wells :-)

Will the 235x15 still let the wheel be mounted on the stock spare holder with the high-mount brake light?

Anyone want to buy (5) 215x75x15's, with (as of today) under 500 miles on them? :-)

Thanks!
-Bill

Re: Jeep Wobble

Good morning. I'm spending my Satruday searching online for others having problems with their jeep. Hopefully, you can offer some help here. I

My '03 has been doing this "wobble' almost always between 45-53 MPH after I have hit some bump in the highway. I have never altered anything on my jeep. I have spent almost $3,000 thur jeep in an attempt to fix the problem-so far, no luck. It appears to be doing it less but I am also drivng it a lot less because I can't handle stressing drivng down the road waiting for it to happen again. A coulel times it's done it when going faster (not as violently luckily).

It's killing me that I still owe almost $7,000 on this thing, and can't drive it where I want. Sometimes i wish someone would just steal it (at least that would stop my monthly payments)
Any suggestions? I heaeer its the stabililzer from others here but now am hearing maybethats not the solution either.
thanks

Re: Jeep Blog

Did you replace the steering damper shock.? Betwween that and the U joints it could be that.
I had my jeep hard to control if I hit a bump and it was all over the place. I replaced the damper and was fine. Also worn U joints can make it hard to control. Thats my 2 cents anyway.
Hope it helps Jim

Re: Jeep Blog

Russ,

I suggest looking into Sway bar bushings. I had that problem, but the jeep was rolled over, and when i put the pry bar under the bar , it separated.
I dont think its steering dampener. I got dual dampener kit from skyjacker and it helps, but not 100% since i had my upper ball joint destroy my interco tires.

Posted by: JENNY at October 24,2006 10:28

Re: Jeep Blog

In my experience, "violent shaking" in the front end (aka Death Wobble) is most often traced back to the front trackbar. That trackbar needs to have good bushings and be VERY tight. Often times it's hard to tell that it's loose just by looking at it (a little play can cause a big problem). Make sure the bolt holes isn't rounded out too.

Hope this helps.

Once I installed a 3" suspention lift the problem went away. I have also heard that replacing tie rod and drag link with a heavy duty "u-turn" tie rod system will help a lot.

Lowside

To answer your question about Jeep letters. In the USA, its always been called Wrangler, but in Canada, General Motors had a copyright on the name, so chrysler/Jeep could not name JEEP a Wrangler, so it chose letter system. I belive
CJ: was built from 1976 to 1986
YJ: was built from 1986 to 1996
TJ: was bulit from 1997 to 2006
In 2007, General motor no loger held the copyright for the name wrangler and starting this year 2007, JEEP in canada as in USA is called WRANGLER!
Its about time

Ps. KJ is jeep liberty

Re: Jeep Blog

When is Jeep going to realize that Jeep people want some solidarity in their Jeep SUV's as much as they do in the Wrangler? I purchased a new Grand Cherokee in '94, and traded that in on a new '98, thinking I would trade again in 2000. Then Jeep felt they had to jump on the "rocket ship" band wagon, and rounded up the bodies in '99, which I thought was a nasty design call. The current version now is reminiscent of a 1970's AMC Hornet station wagon, and is not much more favorable than the previous design. The Commander & Patriot is little more than an H-3/Land Rover blend. The design of the '93-'98 Grand Cherokee is still appealing. My '98 has over 100,000 miles on it, and it is the best vehical I have ever owned, having given me no problems. I would like to trade on a new Jeep, but they are going to have to alter their styling cues before I do- Jeep took the world by storm in '93 with the new GC, and they need to get that fire back. There are just too many choices out there now, and loyal upper scale Jeep peeps are falling by the way-side, according to recent consumer polls.

Shimmying shaking (death wobble?)

Yesterday I experienced for the first time an unsafe condition w my Wrangler - 35K mi, no modifications, occassionally driven w caution off-road by me and believe me, I'm no dare-devil. I sped up to abt 78mph on fwy, and when I had to slow down suddenly, while pumping the breaks, it shook so hard my purse fell off the seat, when I reached about 450-45 mph, I was bouncing, and the GPS on the dashboard bounced around. After releasing the break and loosening my grip on the steering wheel shaking decreased, I pulled off to the side, checked tires and verified no visible problems. Today I decided to test it on a clear fwy stretch and managed to cause the same problem at abt the same exact speed. Shaking seems to be only in the front end and involve the 2 front tires and steering wheel. It is so strong I can barely keep it going straight ahead and have to hold on to the steering wheel in order not to lift off the seat. I've read this blog's info about the death wobble as well as other info that may be pertinent, but seems not to be. Although I've been driving off-road vehicles for many years on and off-road, bc of my lack of mechanical expertise I am reluctant to start going to shops to find out what the problem is without more information. Any help -simplified for my understanding level - would be much appreciated. If you don't want to clutter up the blog for the experts, email me privately. Thanks.

Jeep Wagoneer

I have a Grand Wagoneer 1986 and am looking for help in getting the front 4WD working. I believe there is a vacuum switch in the transfer case that talks to the vacuum motor to put it in gear. Never worked on a 4 WD system before, and just got this Jeep.

Any Help would be Great...Tim

Re: Jeep Blog

have the same wobble issues with a 2004 rocky mountain edition(which is almost identiacal to the columbia edition) dealer just replaced the steering stabilizer after a road test with a tech and he was surprised when it still shook on the followup roadtest with me. they recommendend an allignment afterwards which i have scheduled for next week. but now im wondering if thats the problerm. both packages have larger rim/tire options which may be changeing front end angles mimmicing lifted jeep issues with wobble. im still under waranty but if your close, make sure you document the problem before you hit 36,000 and they'll have to deal with it until its fixed no matter what the mileage. not sure if the dealers and/or jeep are recognizeing a problem because of the smaller number of columbia/RM packages sold at each dealer...probably just 2 or 3 compared to the problem free standard package jeeps with no wobble issues. feel free to email me at hanger12@verizon.net so we can band together to get this issue taken care of.

I have a 2000 tj wrangler. I have just put 31x10.5 tires. I am having a problem with the steering alignment. I recently had it aligned, While driving it today makinga turn I heard a tire scrub and noticed afterwards the steering wheel not centered. This vehicle was wrecked once in the front end. Does anyone know if the tire scrub will off set the steering wheel alignment. Thanks in advance

tire scrub

stuffing bigger rubbers in the fenderwell changes the geometry of were the outside edge of the inside of the tire is when you turn the wheel all the way causeing it to touch the fenderwell. also you didn't mention if you put aftermarket rims on, which if they have the wrong (or different) rim offset than that will cause rubbing too. even with close to stock size tires

Tire/wheel shake

I have a YJ with 4.5" of lift, 31x11.5" tires, and real close to 300,000 miles on it. I got an aftermarket steering stabilizer(Skyjacker) wich seemed to solve the "death wobble" problem. That started around 200,00 miles though. YJ's rule! Coil springs. What are they?

I have a 2006 Rubicon Unlimited (blue and boy is she wonderful!). I am also a cyclist and I am looking for the perfect bike mount for the back trailer hitch. I just bought, and will return tomorrow, the Yakima rack that swings out to the side so I can still open the tail gate.

Problem: The tire is too big and hits the lower bar on the bike rack...by an inch!

I need to find a rack that will allow me to still open my tail gate!

SYE for 2000 TJ

Just wanted a little input from fellow jeepers.
I would like to know the number of people with 3" or 4" lifts that have got Slip Yoke Eliminator kit installed because of the vibrations?Last year I installed a 4" lift and i dropped transfer case plate 1 inch to compensate for the u-joint angle, but i'm still not happy!I know tires and balancing adds to it, but i wonder how much of this vibration can be eliminated with SYE and longer drive shaft.

Soft front windows for 2007 Wrangler

I just bought a 2007 Wrangler with the half doors, but I was disappointed to see that the top half of the door had a hard frame. The problem is, the frames don't lend themselves to easy storage anywhere in the Jeep, making them cumbersome and easy for people to just walk away with when I park.
Are there any aftermarket soft front windows for the 2007? I was hoping for something I could just fold up and store in the back.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Jeep Blog

I bought new soft top wrangler in 97 and still have it. When I got it I discovered that there was no way to take the side and rear panels off and store them nicely. I also have a device that stores the half door panels standing. This reduces the scratching of the windows and keeps them in better shape. There are some storage cases out there but I was looking for something that when stored I just didn't throw them on the bench or over a chair where they will still get worn. I came up with a solution that stores them hanging on a wall and takes up only about 3" of depth and with the door panel holder it only takes up about 4" of depth. What I am wondering is does anyone know who I would contact at Jeep about selling this? Like I said my Jeep is a 97 and my panels are still like new because of this device not to mention when I go to put the top back up The panels are nice and straight and much easier to put back on and zip. Anyone who has put these on knows that if they are bent or wrinkled it makes it very difficult to zip them up.

Re: Jeep Blog

KatieZ

I have a Thule Spare Me rack. It's a spare tire rack. There is a bracket that goes behind the spare, then you put the spare back on and tighten the bolts. A square tube comes through where the center cap on the wheel would be (have to remove) and then the rack secures to this tube.

It works great for me with 2 very light aluminum frame bikes.....but I wouldn't put too much weight on it. Don't quote me on this, but i don't think you can put more than 50 LBS on the tailgate, including spare.

Also, a few months back, someone who had just bought a TJ with no books asked how to remove the soft top.

i found this video online that might be helpful for new TJ owners.

Re: Jeep Blog

I would confirm your comment about the weight limits of the tailgate. It may work great with the stock spare tire mounted to it, but I would not recommend increasing the weight or the leverage against it. I have a '99 with33x12.5's. When I bought it used, it already had an adapter on the spare tire rack to allow the larger spare to fit. The increased weight of the tire and the three extra inches of leverage was enough to warp the door. I have not corrected the problem other than removing the spare, but the best option my research has come up with is a replacement bumper with a bumper mounted, swing out tire rack. There are several styles out there from nearly every Jeep bumper manufacturer in existence. And many have modular add-ons like bike racks and gear storage racks. My personal favorites are from Warn or Bulletproof Bumper. I am a little leery of Bulletproof, as their bumpers are thicker than the frame rails they mount to. I would rather have the bumper bend during an oops than the frame.

SYE Kit for 3-4" lifts

When I replaced the crappy 4" ProComp (never every buy ProComp) that my used TJ came with, I installed a Rubicon 4.5" uberlift. I am extremely happy with this new lift. Anyway, on to the point. When I was looking at different lifts, the one rule that was almost universal between different manufacturers was the recommendation to install a SYE kit with a lift of 3", and considering it mandatory with a lift of 4" or more. After installing it, I can see why. It is now a straight shot for the u-joint by the rear differential.

FYI, if you install it yourself and the driveshaft does not want to stretch, check for paint on the Zerk fitting in shaft. I had this problem. I am a little embarrassed to say that it took me a few hours of head smacking and hammer scratching to figure out.

My kit came with no information on maintenance. Can anyone tell me if you are supposed to grease that Zerk on the drive shaft, and how much grease? I have (possible incorrectly) shot a few squirts of grease inside, but am afraid to try and fill the chamber without some verification that I am doing the right thing. Logically either option could make sense. On one hand, it is a moving component and should (?) be lubricated. On the other hand, the chamber exists to allow the shaft to expand and contract and filling the chamber would inhibit that motion and put excessive pressure on the unit.

Re: Jeep Blog

I've had two Wranglers, a 91 manual that started shaking at 100k miles and a 99 sport that wobbled at 20k miles... both bought new!

I can't guarantee anything but call Chrysler Financial 1-800-556-8172 and ask for the "Hamlin Road Product and Dealer Complaint Line".

BE NICE!!!!!! These people have a spending budget and have the power to approve or deny claims.

Anyways, let them know what's wrong. Make sure you let them know you think its dangerous and have read many claims of the same problem online from all years and mileage of wranglers..

In or out of warranty, their job is to help good customers by alotting money to fix common problems, that weren't big enough for recalls, for good customers. I'm sure they've heard about the wobbles from many customers but I believe they send you to a dealership to have the vehicle inspected and then they can either pay or help pay to fix the problem.

No guarantees! But it's worth a try. I work for Chrysler Financial and that would be the step to take to get things fixed..

Re: Jeep Blog

In regards to death wobble. I recently had the problem very bad and replaced the steering damper first(that is what the jeep dealer said was the problem), it didn't help. A good none dealer mechanic said there was nothing wrong with suspension to cause the wobble, he said to get rid of the goodyears, and stay away from goodyear tires, and also to get new shocks . Also I was told the the goodyear gsa tires were out of round. I purchased a set of nitrogen filled Toyo open country P235's and Gabriel Ultra shocks. I now have a 2004 wrangler x with no wobble. The shocks stiffened the ride a little, it now rides like the CJ7 I use to have and I like it. It seemed like a waste to replace the gsa's which had half the tread left but it is a huge relief not to have to worry about the death wobble and going out of control or worse anymore. Hope this helps and saves somebody some expense and grief. I personaly will never buy goodyear tires again and I like the Toyo's very much so far, the dealer has a set on his vehicle and recommended them, they also are much quieter on the road than the gsa's.

Re: Jeep Blog

I now see that others are having problems with their Jeep's and the violent shaking of the front end. I had a 91 Wrangler for 12 years with no problems. I finally bought a new one Wrangler in 2003 and actually went through the Lemon Law process, only to have Chrysler buy me out. I tried again with a 2005 Wrangler, this time the upgraded Sport model, thinking it would be better built. Well, now I'm past the Lemon Law phase, but this one has started to do the same exact thing again. I do not feel safe driving my Jeep and would really like them to fix the problem and not keep making me pay for it saying it's the tires or it's the front end or anything else that the consumer has to foot the bill for.

Any one have any suggestions on how I can get this resolved with out costing me an arm & a leg??

Death Wobble

I have a partial disagreement with your mechanic about the Goodyear tires being the problem. I have heard from many, many offroaders singing the praises of some of Goodyears offerings, MTR's in particular. Besides, my Jeep has never had Goodyears under it, and has had the death wobble problem since it was three. It is now eight.

He is correct about it not being the suspension. I tried that. He is incorrect about the shocks being the problem. I also tried that. The tires were most likely out of round and accentuating the problem, but was, in my opinion more a symptom than a cause. How did your tires become out of round? Certainly not normal wear. Steering stabilizer? Again, symptom not cause. It can reduce that wobble, just like replacing the tires, but will not snuff the source.

I have had a brand new set of BFG AT KO's, relatively new stabilizer(1 year old at that time), a very excellent and complete suspension with new quality shocks and a new complete rear axle assembly (not related, blew a second differential and did not want to see a third one go) and still had wobble. Of all the things that I have done so far, the tires helped, but not enough to prevent the wobble, and the stabilizer did stop the death wobble for several weeks, but it eventually subsided.

I have tested the bearing and the ball joints and neither appears to be damaged, though neither is beyond suspect as they have not yet been replaced.

The wobble is worst when everything in the front suspension is well lubricated. Wobble is gone when I have not been flexing the suspension much and when I have neglected lubricating the suspension, especially the steering components. I live in Alaska and 4-6 months of -25F on warm days kinda saps the pleasure from simple maintenance tasks. Also, temperature may have an effect, but I cannot divine a reason better than the added stiffness in the front end from ice cold grease, though I have been told that the cold should loosen the front end because the joints shrink in their sockets.

I have looked out the window of my truck during severe wobble to determine for sure that what I was experiencing was undeniably coming from the front tires. I witnessed my tires rotating approximately 45-60 degrees without my assistance or permission. The rotation is along the steering axis, horizontally, not vertically. While I am not a mechanic, I do know a fair bit about physics. Out of round tires should cause a vertical hop, not a horizontal rotation. And if they are so severely out of round that the tires move several inches, your tires are flat. There simply is not enough tread to cause that. Now, a horizontal rotation, especially if it is periodic will cause uneven wear spots on the tire. Mine currently have a 1/4" variation between the highest spots and the lowest. Pretty extreme, but perfectly round tires still wobble my rims.

Here is my current theory on the Death Wobble:

When the TJ drives, the tires are jarred by small bumps in the road. Primarily this causes a vertical hop, but also creates a minor rotational force in the tire as one side of the tire undergoes increased resistance from the obstacle and not the other side. In a new, stock Jeep this rotational force is relatively small, as mostly absorbed by the new, tight steering joints and the steering stabilizer. Installing larger and wider tires increases dramatically the leverage the road has against the truck. This increases the rotational force caused by obstacles and, in turn, increases the wear on the steering components, mainly the joints, stabilizer, and the gearbox. As the truck is driven more, the joints become looser and the stabilizer fades. Now the only resistance against the rotational force is the opposite tire and the gearbox.

And here is the important part. In this condition, one tire starts a wobble and transfers the energy to the other tire via the steering components. At low speeds there is not enough force to cause much affect. At high speeds both tires have enough centrifugal force to stabilize themselves. But at just the right speed, oh, say 45-50 miles per hour, the system becomes resonant, sorta. One tire starts to rotate, causes the other tire to rotate. Both tires absorbs energy from the vehicles forward motion snapping the tires back the opposite direction. Since energy has increased, the tires rotate further this time and again absorb more energy snapping back again. See a pattern?

In early stages of Death Wobble I have been able to muscle my way through the infectious speed by gunning the accelerator till I am through it. In later stages it does not seem to work anymore because the increased acceleration also increases the wobble. When I reached that stage I almost fell off the road, so to speak. The most effective driving technique I have found it to carefully and cautiously accelerate through the wobble range. If you start to feel wobble, back off. The decrease in momentum has a negative affect on the resonance. When it stabilizes, start to accelerate again. This should work well for a good while. When the disease gets in its latest stages, you will just have to get used to driving at 35-40 mph.

For me, the new long arm suspension and the stabilizer have had the greatest affects on Death Wobble. It brought the disease from it latest stages back to a manageable driving nuisance. Right now it is worst than it has been in two years and I simply cannot drive in the wobble range.

Solutions? I foresee five primary factors. 1} When you lift your truck, spend the money on a good quality lift. If you are lifting it 3" or more get an adjustable long arm suspension. This will have the least affect on your steering geometry and give the least increase in steering component wear. 2} Watch for uneven wear (out of round) on your tires. If you see it, you are being affected by death wobble even if you can't feel it. Check your steering stabilizer and your joints. Both will likely need replacement. 3} Upgrade your steering joints. I am not sure if upgrades kits exist for the existing rods, but I know upgraded rods with stronger ends can be found. 4} There is a replacement steering knuckle that can be purchased which raises the height of the connection between the passenger side knuckle and the drag link. The result is a restored steering geometry and reduced wear. 5} Rock Ram. What could absorb more force than replacing the steering stabilizer with a hydraulic cylinder connected to the power steering? 6} Aw, F*ck it! Replace the front and rear axle assemblies with Dana 60's with heavy duty axle shafts, extra low gearing, and Detroit Lockers, bump up your lift to 5-6", replace the engine with a beefed up 383, install 35's and cut the fenders. Then get a trailer and a pickup to haul your off-road toy to the trail and forget about the Death Wobble.

Re: Jeep Blog

I too have a death wobble problem. Here's the deal, my youngest son has a 2006 tj. Recently we installed a 2and1/4 inch suspension lift, we replaced the factory coil springs with Rubicon springs and installed 4 new skyjacker shocks. Now at around 45 mph, the front wheels shake vioently and the only cure is to come to almost a complete stop. We never had this problem before the lift, although the steering did feel loose and sloppy when a bump was hit. There is about 22,000 mi on the jeep, we just had the front end aligned, but the wobble is still present. Can anyone give me a similar experience with a definite solution? Thanks.

Re: Jeep Blog

I think my 2000 Jeep cherokee could have the Death Wobble. This morning, on the way home from church, I was rounding a small curve after I'd just crossed a bridge. The road is paved, but is bumpy. All the sudden my Jeep began to bounce as if I were driving on gravel road washboard! At first I thought I had a flat tire. But the Jeep began to shake so violently that I was sure I was going to end up in an accident.
I mean, it was the whole Jeep, the steering wheel, everything! I let off the gas and the shaking slowed, then stopped. I was pretty shook up, but since I was out in the middle of nowhere, I continued on home. (but very cautiously).
Perhaps it's time to trade the thing in? We've had to have the window controls replaced, the air conditioner works while driving, but blows hot while idleing. Now this shake?
I tell you, after today I'm scared to drive it anymore!
Oh, by the way, I'm the original owner, as I said, 2000 Jeep Cherokee with 78k miles. I love (loved) my Jeep and wanted to keep it till it dies. It's always been maintained as recommended. Any thoughts or ideas?

Re: Tammy

It sounds like you are suffering the same problem. Jeep Cherokees share the same systems as the Wrangler, and even the same components in many cases. Do you have any after market equipment? So far, I have not found a case of Death Wobble that did not have at least mildly larger tires. Mine, for example is running 33x12.50's.

If you love your Jeep, fight the wobble. My first suggestion is to replace the steering stabilizer. That will not solve the root of the problem, but it may buy you time. Next, either replace the joints in the steering linkage system: the drag link and the tie rod, or upgrade that system with something like what TeraFlex offers. Such a system is designed to return your steering geometry back to normal after a lift, if you have one. Another suggestion that I have heard is replacing the shocks, but that option has done nothing in my experiences. Likewise, I have heard the suggestion that the front tires are likely out of round, but I believe that to be a symptom, not a cause. Regardless, you might have them checked. Changing out of round tires may have some effect, but again, it did nothing for me.

I have spoken with many different mechanics: dealership mechanics, independent mechanics and Jeep specialized fabricators who spend half their time building up uber trail rigs from Wranglers and the other half building custom rigs from scratch. I have followed every bit of advise they have offered, no matter how insane it sounded and I still have the problem. The only one that helped was the custom fabricator. He is the one that told me that it is a widespread issue and can be very random. Some rigs suffer, others don't. When I told him all the things various mechanics suggested, he laughed. He said no one really knows for sure what the problem really is, but it seems to be a steering issue and that is why I make the above suggestions.

I truly hope this helps and that you are able to enjoy many more years with your beloved Cherokee. I wish I had one. Car seats in a TJ is kinda laughable.

I have an 88 Jeep Wrangler. It too has this death wobble. My hubby and neighbor looked it over and couldn't find any reason that this should be happening. I figured I would get online and see what I could find and here I am. I can't believe that mine has this and it is an 88 and you still see it in the new ones. It doesn't have any lift or anything, it's all stock. I believe there are less than 100,000 miles on it. Seems like it usually happens uncontrollably if I am going over 60 mph. It happened to me 3 times today within about 30 miles and one time I was only going about 55mph I backed off when it started and it didn't get bad, but the 2 times I was doing 60mph or just over it was uncontrollable I had to back off and get over to the shoulder and it didn't stop til I got down to about 35mph. I think this is something Jeep should deal with on all years have an engineering dept or something figure out what they are doing wrong and recall it on all models!!

I installed a RE 2 " budget boost lift with gas shocks and new steering stabilizer. Now I have death wobble. Could it be the small stock tires with the lift? the Stealership says I need a drop pitman arm, but they dont make a 2" drop pitman arm because they are only needed for a 4" lift, help me before I run off the road and hit a Tree and die.

Re: Jeep Blog

I recently bought a 1995 Jeep wrangler (76300 miles) and as soon as I got it home, I changed the oil and antifreeze, then the water pump went out .
Few days later, I'm driving down the highway and it made a loud back fire noise, a day later it did it again.
any suggestions to what it could be?

Re: Jeep Blog

I came on this site to get answers about the Death Wobble only to find the same problem with no answers.

Dosn't anyone have the answer?

My dealership says I have a loose track bar, tie rod, and pitman arm plus warped rotors that causes it to shake. Now I am wondering if I should just trade it in for another vehicle.

yeah go trade that in on anything but a Jeep, they are nothing more than an expensive death trap, JEEP means (Just Empty Every Pocket!)

Re: Jeep Blog

Hi, I've been reading through here and seeing exactly what I was looking for, all comments on the "death wobble". I have a 2005 Wrangler X Series, I'm protective of my warranties so I don't modify a thing on my Jeep. The first time it started it's wobbling, around 8k miles, was only when going around 45-50 mph and applying the brake. Took it in to the dealership. They told me I was either climbing mountains with my brakes on or just plain out stopping too much (the answer was heat warped rotars). They reshaped the rotars and I was back on the road to return the Jeep another 2 or 3 times in the next year. When I took it back the 4th time they told me the warranty for my rotars is about up, so I can't take it back and have them fix it for free. Last week at 17k miles barely even touched a dip in the road at 65 mph and the entire (not just the front end) began to shake, when I applied the brake, it finally calmed itself. Now I'm a bit worried about driving it at all, and don't want to take it back in so they can tell me it's the rotars. I see lots of comments mentioning the tires and wedging something into this or that. Any more ideas, something that we can say for sure is Jeeps' fault?

"Death Wobble"
Great. I have a 2004 wrangler. 31k miles and 31x10.50 tires. No lift. Bought it used. And at 40-50 mph I get the dreaded wobble. Im afraid after reading all these posts. Does anyone-anywhere have a clue. Im a diesel mechanic and I dont. But I dont want to just throw parts at it. The tread on my tires are at different heights. Crazy! never seen it before. I was told that the air psi was to low. Checked it--------fine. My track bar is bent to crap-----because i have waited to long........replaced now. But why? Thats the question. Any one think they can help? I live in hawaii......so not many trail rides I do- all streets. Thanks

Re: Jeep Blog

My jeep still has the death wobble after I had the tires rotated and rebalanced and then took it in to the shop again and they said my front tires were not balanced right but it still had it. I had the allignment done and that helped for a while but I still have a wobble. It doesn't do it as much now but it is still there. I had a new damper shock replaced because that is what the dealership said was wrong but that didn't even help it at all. I am tired of throwing money into this. Should I replace the tie rod ends next?

Re: Jeep Blog

Hi,
I am hoping for help with a question about tire size for my 2003 Rubicon with a 4" lift. In just one year I have worn out my 31" Goodyear tires; I go wheeling over alot of rocks. I am wanting to get as much clearance within reason, considering my Jeep is a daily driver. I was considering going with 33" tires, but tire dealers seem to not recommend the larger, wider tires because of the wear on the ball joints, etc. I belong to a 4x4 club and everyone seems to run 33" tire and up. I would appreciate any suggestions because I am looking at putting out a lot of cash for new tires and wheels. Thanks, Troy

Re: Jeep Blog

I have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. and I am having some serious problems with it. Twice I had to replace the air conditioning unit under the dash. That is only one issue. More importantly are the issues of my tire hitting a bump on the highway and the whole Jeep starts shaking like I blew a tire and the other issue is that now my Jeep won't hold a charge. The voltage meter on the dash shows it very low but when I hit the highway and rev it up then it jumps up to normal but after that as I cruise along at regular speeds on the highway or on residential roads it just starts to drop off again. Any ideas??? Thanks so much!!!

The "Death Wobble" I too have experienced this. I had no idea how many folks were affected. My Jeep is under warranty so I took it in. The dealership told me it was the ball stud bushing and said the warranty wouldn't cover it, it would be 6k to fix it. I got a lawyer and filed a lawsuit. Jeep settled with me. If I'd have known so many problem have the same exact problem I would have tried a class action suit. Maybe that would force Jeep to take a seious look at this issue and come up with a solution.

I have a 2002 Wrangler Sahara Edition. I love it it is one of the best cars Ive ever had. Unfortunately the Drive shaft fell off on the highway due to a cracked transfer case that the warranty will not cover because the dealership say that i went off road in it. Isnt that what a Jeep is for??? I havent been off road with it for the exception of where I live on a dirt road in the pocono mountains of Pennsylvania. Now 3 weeks later Im still waiting on a new transfer case that is on a national back order. MAYBE SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE TRANSFER CASE. 2 of them have been delivered to the dealership have arrived broken. Sound fishy to anyone?

Wheel Bearing Problem

My 2002 jeep grand cherokee has had three rear wheel bearings fail within six months. The jeep dealer claims that the bearings were defective, so I haven't been charged for replacing them. Now the latest bearing sounds like it's bad.

Has anyone else had a problem like this? Is it really plausible that three bearings would be defective? I can't help thinking that it's the service tech that's defective, not the bearings

However, when I asked to speak with someone in the public affairs office she would not put me through claiming the media office do not speak with consumer directly. How disconcerting that Chrysler does not Therefore, the reporter who wrote this article should further verify for consumers and current owners of the Commander that would want to know if Chrysler indeed plans eliminate this vehicle before consideration given to purchase.

Question on Shocks

I have a 2004 Jeep wrangler. I put a 4 in' lift kit on it about 2 years ago. I am ready to replace my shocks, and I want to get a nice set. I've been shopping online and don't understand what I'm buying.

Can I get any set that fits on a 2004 wrangler, or do I need to find a set that is apart of a 4' lift?

Posted by: Joe at February 07,2008 22:45

Re: Jeep Blog

If im understanding your question right then you'll get my answer. When your buying shocks, you need to get them according to how tall your lift is. if you buy them according to your year, you'll get stock shocks. which will be way too short and wont work

A friend gave me a jeep. 79 CJ-5. No rust. Stock. Starter bendix, wiper motor, no rear seat, no spare tire and stock seats. It has a 3 speed manual trans and it just doesnt seem like it drives very well over 55mph.

Being new to jeeps I wanted to get pointed in the right direction if you can help I would greatly appreciate it.

Where is the best place to buy parts?

What is a quality 3 point restraint system with seats so I can get rid of the old stock seats with lap belts.

Is there a compatible back seat as well that you know of?

Lastly, what is the best method for getting this Jeep to do 70mph comfortably. I swear a little jerk in the steering wheel and it feels like it could flip.

I want to try to stabelize this and I would be very grateful on where to start.

Thanks

Posted by: Jim at April 07,2008 10:31

AUTO v. MANUAL

Towing or off-roading, manual gives you more precision in being able to pick the appropriate gear and ease the clutch for slow movements.

Everyday street riding, auto is a lot easier and more relaxing. With auto, you're still able to perform down-shift gearing tricks for extra control/power, but some control is lost.

I have the 6-speed manual and love it. I've rented auto Jeeps twice the past few months, and find the power is not the same; may have been a smaller engine, but still, much less responsive than manual.

Wobble and Stink!

Hi all - not sure if my Jeep Grand Cherokee has a severe case of death Wobble or if this is something else. The steering wheel wobbles terribly after I hit a bump or hole in the road (I'm on gravel so this is just about everyday). But, the transfer case gets really hot, too, and starts to stink something awful, like it's on fire. It's almost like it wants to engage in 4-wheel drive but is stuck. I put it in neutral and move it into part-time 4WD and then back out again and that used to help but not anymore. Am I SOL?

Thanks for any help on this!

Re: Jeep Blog

I picked up a near mint 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee here in Michigan that came from California. It is so awesome to look underneath and see mint bolts and frame....Michigan winters and the salt do horrible things to Jeeps in a very short time. Anyhow it has engine troubles and they are bad enough to warrant a rebuild on a second 5.2 liter I already picked up. My questions are in respect to opinions on whether to keep this near mint vehicle stock or should I lift it, change motor to a Chevy small block automatic and 205 transfer case setup? Fixing it all original would be a nice ride and all but did these vehicles have any known issues that they were known for? If so then maybe making it a fine looking ride with a set of Dana 60's and full Chevy drivetrain is an option. Thanks ahead for any input.

I am the proud owner of a 2006 Jeep Wrangler which I purchased stock and plan on hanging on to. I have done an extensive amount of modifications since Nov. 06 when I purchased "my baby" with the most recent being a 3 1/2 inch Rubicon Express suspension lift and a 1 inch Daystar bodylift. Prior to this I had a 3 inch body lift only. Since I have put the new lift on, there is a squeeking noise that can be heard in the front end when I accelerate from a stop. It sounds like an old squeeky bed, if you can imagine that. I was curious if anyone knows what that may be. Do I need a slip yoke eliminator or could it be something simple, like the u-joints needing to be greased. Please let me know your input and thanks in advance.
